History

For over a hundred years, St John's has served as a centre of worship and pastoral care. Most of that time the church has been located in Finch Street, but earlier it was closer to the Caulfield Racecourse on the current Post Office site.

It was in response to the need for religious education and care for those people working at the Racecourse that the first St John's was founded in 1883 as a branch church of St Mary's, Caulfield.

It soon became apparent that the infant church could not meet the needs of the growing community, and in 1888 St John's acquired land in Finch Street and commenced construction of a new brick church.

It is a place of immense historical, religious, and community significance in the Stonnington area and within the Anglican Diocese of Melbourne. The church is a Classified building in the Register of the National Trust of Australia.
